What I Hate About Console Gaming

This is in response to ARandomGamer.com’s post ” What I hate About PC Gaming”.  I started out as a console gamer until that faithful day about 14 yrs ago when I got my first PC.  For the next 5-6 or so years I gamed on both consoles and PC, until the last generation (Gamecube, PS2, Xbox) of consoles came out and I decided, f*ck’em, PC gaming is superior.  I then decided I would come back to console gaming and bought a Wii the first week it came out and have also played many games on my friends Xbox360 and PS3.   Conclusion, I haven’t used by Nintendo Wii in over a yr and could care less about the Xbox360 or PS3.  Now that you have some background lets get to why I hate console gaming.

Hardware

You might say that you constantly need to upgrade your PC to play the newest games, but this is not true at all.  My last upgrade was about 18 months ago and I’m still playing all the new games at max or near max settings and I don’t plan on upgrading anything for at least another yr.  You’re PS3 might last 5-6 yrs, but guess what, in the last 2-3 yrs of your consoles life cycle the games are going to look like sh*t compared to PC games.

Crappy Controls

I have no clue how this became a plus for consoles, but mouse/keyboard combo dominates in almost every way possible.  Real-time strategy (RTS) games are almost unplayable on consoles, one of the reasons there are almost none.  First person shooters are also dominated by mouse/keyboards, one of the reasons no professional gamer uses a gamepad, you just can’t get the quick aiming you can with a mouse.  Gamepads are great for platform and sport games that’s it, good thing PC’s can also use gamepads.

No Mod Community

Last I heard there was no moding on consoles.  Sad because that’s what really makes PC gaming shine, player created content.  I’m mean just look at Counter-Strike, the top FPS in the world created by gamers for free, at least at one point it was free.   There have been hundreds of mods created for hundreds of different games, new maps, new skins, new game features all for free.   Some Mods are massive, changing sci-fi strategy game into a FPS, while others are just tweaks to the user interface or inventory system.

Less Choice

Consoles lack in two major game genres, RTS and MMOs.  Sadly MMO games have not faired well so far on consoles.  Whether it’s the lack of online community or limits by the contollers, MMO games on consoles are few and far inbetween.   There are a few, but nothing like the hundred or so on the PC.  RTS games are also lacking on consoles, mainly because you can’t play them well using a gamepad.

We also get many of your games, GTA4, Halo 1&2, Assassins Creed, Gear of War, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, Guitar Hero 1, 2, 3 to name a few and when we do, they usually have more content and sometimes with upgraded graphics.

The Console

I hate the console itself, just another thing you have to hookup to your TV and that takes up space.  I hate switching out the games and making sure I don’t scratch the disc.  Once a PC game is installed I never have to touch the disc again.  I hate that in 2009 consoles, except for XB0x, still have not learned that gamers like playing online vs other players.  Sony might be working on it, but Nintendo is asleep at the wheel.  I hate that I’m locked into a console once I purchase one.  If I get a XBox, then decide to switch to PS, I can’t play any of my old XBox games without rewiring my TV.

Communication

With a PC, you can actually text chat with other people.  You’re not forced to go buy headphones and listen to some 13 yr old kid who’s voice keeps cracking while there verbally assaulting you.  Although the PC does give you that option if you want.  I’m sure you can get a keyboard on your console to type, but that gamepad sure does get in the way.

Nintendo Wii

I’ve talked about Xbox and PS in most of this article and have left the Wii out of it for the most part, so I decided to give it own category so the fanboys will be happy.  I hate the Wii cause I don’t want to move my arms around like an idiot.  I don’t want to stand on a flat board and pretend I’m skiing or exercising .  I hate the Wii cause I don’t want to play the same old games with barely updated graphics for the 10th time.  I’m looking at your Mario, Zelda and Metroid.    I hate the Wii cause it doesn’t care about mature gamers.   Yes, there are games I’ve liked, but none that held my attentions for more than a few days.

For me PC games have far superior controls and communication, add a huge mod community and consoles are left in the dust.  After this last generation, I just don’t see myself ever going back to consoles.

ChinaJoy Launches a New Plan of Business Events

BEIJING, Feb. 26 — The Organization Committee of ChinaJoy, one of the top game exhibitions in the world, recently announced that it would hold a series of business events, including “China Game Business Conference” (CGBC) and a “B2B Area”, during this year’s exhibition in Shanghai so that participants may better take advantage of the business opportunities brought about by China’s booming game industry. The incredible growth of the game industry in China, as well as in related industries, is said to generate a direct demand worth as much as USD 3.3 billion and presents huge opportunities for game-related enterprises and IT companies from around the world.

This is especially significant and timely for the crisis-stricken world economy. As depression and crunch seeps into every trade, the online game industry in China stands out as a surprising exception. Some of the institutions from overseas may not know about this industry very well but they are equally optimistic in their forecast: according to statistics from IDG and other market surveyors, this industry has reached a total sales volume of nearly 20 billion and is expected to grow with an annual rate of over 50%. This is very good news against the falling world economy, but what should we do to better take advantage of this growth is a question faced by both Chinese and foreign game companies.
 
Therefore, after announcing its intent of comprehensive cooperation with the CGDC, ChinaJoy Organization Committee launched its new plan of business events, including “China Game Business Conference” (CGBC) and a “B2B Area”.
 
As Mr. Han Zhihai, Secretary-general of the Organization Committee, notes, both events are specially created by them to facilitate business talks and communication between Chinese and foreign companies. Online games were born in China ten years ago and this industry has now entered a new era where companies from overseas are welcomed to jointly operate in China and enterprises from the Mainland also look to operate games overseas. Besides, in the face of the international financial crisis, the huge demand posted by the online game industry in China means great business opportunities for related foreign companies.
 
ChinaJoy has always hosted forums to accompany its exhibition, the most notable of which may be “China Digital Entertainment Summit Forum”. With government authorities and key companies in the industry as speakers, this summit has received considerable attention and coverage. In every summit, officials from relevant government organizations, for example, the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China, would detail its policies and instructions for the game industry and those top management people from the major game companies, like Blizzard, EA, Microsoft, Shanda, NetEase, The Nine, and Perfect World, would also air their views on the industry and their companies’ future development. In addition to this summit, ChinaJoy, for example in 2008, also hosted six forums for individual topics, including “China Game Investment & Development Forum”, “China Mobile Entertainment Development Forum”, “China Casual Game Development Forum”, “China In-game Advertising Forum”, “China Game Distribution and Promotion Forum”, and “China Web-game Development Forum”. Industry professionals from home and abroad had a heated discussion on the key issues facing China that year.
 
In 2009, however, all the forum or summit discussions will be incorporated into one big event — “China Game Business Conference” (CGBC) so that business communication will be better promoted. CGBC will be held in China International Convention Center, where participants will enjoy their talk in a true business environment. For 2009, in addition to “China Digital Entertainment Summit Forum” where authorities, experts and key industry professionals will again be invited to share their views on the development and trend of the industry, the Organization Committee will also host five forums for “China Game Investment & Development Forum”, “China Mobile Entertainment Development Forum”, “China In-game Advertising Forum”, “China Webgame Development Forum” and “China SNS and Plug-in Game Forum”. The last topic is added so that companies will be able to discuss a business model to combine the SNS community and games.
 
The “B2B Area” was introduced in 2007, which was used by major outsourcing companies and technology suppliers like Winking, the Canadian Pavilion and Axis 3D to promote their services and technologies. As the Organization Committee notes, ChinaJoy will bring together virtually all the management personnel and marketing forces of game companies in Mainland China, and is thus a wonderful opportunity for promotion of business and technology, especially for those companies who find it difficult or expensive to start a partnership. At the 2009 conference, the Organization Committee will prepare two choices for companies to choose: the exhibition and CGBC. Those companies who are more into B2C promotion may find the exhibition center more attractive, where there will be over 100,000 public visitors trying their products out. However, if a participant mostly does business and technology promotion, the CGBC will provide him with comfort and convenience, as well as an abundance of business visitors.  
 
ChinaJoy Organization Committee also announced that, according to their agreement with CGDC (China Game Development Conference), the 2009 CGBC and CGDC will be held along with each other in Shanghai International Convention Center. Therefore, developers will also join this year’s event, which makes it the only event gathering professionals in the game industry, and is not to be missed

Tabula Rasa’s Swan Song

NCsoft’s sci-fi MMO Tabula Rasa finally reaches its planned shut-down date today.

But the development team at NCSoft Austin seems to be taking the opportunity to create something almost unheard of in video game story: a final, absolute ending to the narrative in which the good guys ultimately die.

According to an in-character message posted on the game’s official site, the world of Tabula Rasa (which apparently dropped its Richard Garriott’s prefix in the wake of the designer’s departure following his return from outer space), will become overrun by an unstoppable tide of alien enemies, with humanity’s only response being mutually assured destruction.

To All AFS Personnel;

Special Intelligence units throughout AFS territory have been monitoring an escalation of Bane assaults and communications in the recent weeks. Some of the communications have been intercepted and decoded, and we have reason to believe that the Bane are planning a massive, multi-front assault sometime in the coming days. The most disturbing transmission appears to have originated from the center of Bane controlled space, and it appears that the Neph are getting directly involved in the upcoming Bane offensive.

We know that the Neph are an offshoot of the Eloh race, and they sided with the Thrax in their campaign against the rest of the universe. The Neph seek to subjugate and control the races of the universe, and as we know from Machina and the Forean infection, they don’t require that we are willing.

The Neph are extremely powerful and dangerous; they are not only aggressive like the Thrax, they are also shrewd and cunning commanders. Our intelligence sources tell us that the Neph are no longer fully organic beings, having completely fused themselves with a form of bio-metallic technology unlike anything we have ever seen. Like the Eloh, they are all proficient in a form of Logos powers, and have assimilated technologies to amplify these powers significantly.

From this intercepted transmission, we also know that they now have full use of wormhole technology. For a long time, this technological disadvantage forced the Bane to transport their troops through space, but now we may have to face wave after wave of Bane troops without rest or respite. We also know that the Neph will be on the battlefield to lead and rally the Bane troops against us on Arieki and Foreas with the sole purpose of complete and absolute genocide. Any Neph that is seen on the battlefield must be eliminated, and quickly, before they can transport a large enough Bane force to overrun us.

We request that all military personnel begin fortifying defenses at every AFS base in preparation for a massive Bane assault. If enemy troop movements are as large as we fear, and the Neph are truly prepared to lead all out war against us, this may be our last stand. Penumbra has been informed of the situation and is standing by on the use of their last resort weapon. We can not afford to be complacent or uncertain, but if it is truly our destiny to be destroyed, we are taking them all with us.

MMOsite: Can you basically introduce the four classes in Nostale Online to our readers? What sort of unique traits will each of them have? And what is their typical role in a team?

Stefano: The first class, and the one that everyone starts off as, is the Adventurer. You can consider him the “jack of all trades, master of none” sort of character. He has some ranged attacks, some melee skills and a little bit of magic, but none quite as good as the other three classes. People looking for a challenge sometimes decide to never pick another class and see how far they can level their adventurer. The other three classes are Sorcerer, Swordsman and Archer which as their name suggests are masters of magic, swordplay and ranged attacks respectively. This will also have an impact on the specialist classes that you can get with those classes as well.

MMOsite: And how about the specialist? Is that a new class? Can you give us some details about that?

Stefano: The Specialist card system is a great way to make your character’s class unique but still go back to the basics if you need to. Basically, by completing certain challenging missions you can get Specialist cards tailored to your character’s class that allow you to take the form of a new (and potentially more powerful) class that the player can play and level, and can be unequipped to go back to your regular character. A player can get multiple amounts of these cards to level, and the stronger your character is, the more powerful the Specialist card he/she can equip.

MMOsite: Can you introduce some other features of Nostale Online for our readers, for example the mini house, pets, etc.?

Stefano: One feature that we particularly enjoy is the fun and easy to access events that happen every hour or so. These are two basic events that players can join in no matter where they are in the game. The first is called IceBreaker, and it’s a free for all PvP game based on the concept of freeze tag, once a player gets killed he becomes a big giant ice cube, then that player joins the team of whoever defrosts him first. The game ends when there is only one team left standing. The second is Instant Combat, where you and your fellow Nostale players have to work together to fight of waves of continually harder monsters.

MMOsite: How often will GMs host in-game events for players? What are some examples that have already been run recently? And any exciting ones on your schedule?

Stefano: We tend to have live GM-hosted events every two weeks. Some are simple but the prizes are really great, we’ve even had users emailing us saying that are prizes are almost too good. The last GM event that we did was a math style event, in which players were asked to come up with answers to simple math problems in order to figure out what item they needed to give the GM. It may seem like a slightly nerdy event, but players responded really positively towards it. I think people really want to try something different than the same style events they get from other games. The next GM hosted event will be happening on February 23rd and will be the Hero Mission Time Trial. Users will have to join up in teams to race through a dungeon and see which team gets the best time. The top prize for the winner is 50,000 UFOs which can be used in the in-game cash mall.

MMOsite: Finally, do you have anything more we didn’t involve in this interview about Nostale Online that you’d like to tell our readers?

Chris: We will be adding new items and other features in the upcoming months, so players should be ready for those exciting new developments. Also, our GM is planning more and even better events over the next month and beyond.

EVE Online: Apocrypha Features List Unveiled

CCP revealed today the full features list for EVE Online: Apocrypha, the tenth free expansion for the popular science fiction massively multi-player online game EVE Online. EVE Online: Apocrypha features new regions, Tech 3 modular ships, Epic Mission Arcs, an entirely reworked New Player Experience for those joining (or rejoining) the game, and more (check full article for details). EVE Online: Apocrypha is slated for a March 10th release.

Internet “Addiction” May Fuel Teen Aggression?

According to Reuters Health, teenagers who are preoccupied with their Internet time may be more prone to aggressive behavior, researchers reported recently.

Researchers in Taiwan claim to have proven another link between teenage aggressiveness and Internet addiction

Researchers studied 9,405 Taiwanese teenagers, and found that all who were said to be addicted to the internet were more likely to be aggressive towards their peers — more likely to admit to hitting, shoving or threatening their peers within the past 12 months.

Of the 9,405 participants, 25 percent of male teenagers and 13 percent of female teenagers were believed to be official internet addicts.  Thirty two percent of all males and 13 percent of girls admitted to engaging in aggressive behavior, though 37 percent of participants with internet addiction also engaged in aggressive behavior.

“Online chatting, adult sex Web viewing, online gaming, online gambling and [surfing the] Bulletin Board System were all associated with aggressive behaviors,” as teenagers would create the opportunity to “observe, experience and try aggressive behaviors [on the internet] resulting in positive outcome, [such as] identification in a group, being a hero or winning in games,” researchers observed in the study.

Researchers published their findings in the Journal of Adolescent Health, but will be met by certain levels of criticism and doubt among other researchers.  Despite the findings of the Taiwanese researchers, it seems U.S. researchers aren’t quite ready to blame the internet for aggressive behavior among adolescents.

Aside from the fact it’s unknown how internet addiction was officially defined, there are numerous other factors that could have come into play, other researchers said.  Chinese researchers have created some guidelines towards the official definition of internet addiction, but a global definition has not been created and agreed upon.

“It could be that using the internet causes people to behave more aggressively or it could be that aggressive people seek out the internet,” according to Brad Bushman, University of Michigan psychology professor.  “Or some other third factor could cause both — people with poor social skills don’t have any friends, so they spend a lot of time on the internet and can’t resolve conflicts in non-aggressive ways.”

Darkfall Launch Update

Of course, every Darkfall fans knows what day it is today. Darkfall should be fully online sometime today, but thing has not gone to plan.

Darkfall Online’s lead developer, Tasos Flambouras, has posted a short statement. According to the post, processing preorder payments has gone slower than anticipated but accounts should be ready to play sometime tonight.

We’ve been waiting for the pre-orders to process through billing and it has been moving along but not fast enough. We’re almost done with this. Many of you will be getting notifications of this during this process. As soon as this is concluded we’ll process the accounts and open up the servers for the pre-orders. This will be done tonight; the game has been ready and waiting.

Unfortunately we’re running behind schedule as far as opening up the extra sales which we hoped to do tonight as well. We’ll do this tomorrow as early as possible, likely sometime around noon GMT time, around the time of our first scheduled maintenance. At this time we will also process the problematic accounts which had 0 euro problems, no charges, no balance, but received a successful pre-order message. We are also looking into the few cases that have pre-ordered but have not received a confirmation email and we will resolve all these issues. Most of these problems were due to a combination of lag, multiple sessions, and multiple charge attempts.

We want to thank you for your patience again, and we would like to let you know that we’re adding a couple more days to the free month of play making them 33 for everyone that pre-ordered and that will buy the game tomorrow. This is to make up for any bad experience with the account management, the lag and the delays you’ve had to face with purchasing.

The traffic volume we’ve been experiencing has been unbelievably high because of the initial rush and was compounded by users hammering the system with multiple sessions. You should also know that we have been doing everything necessary to resolve all these issues as soon as possible.
