Epic WoW movie – The Craft of War: BLIND

An epic WoW movie? Do you feel that I’m laying it on a little thick? Just be sure to watch all of it and then express your opinion. You will find it’s absolutely spectacular. Of course, this is just only the trailer. Percula posted The Craft of War: BLIND on Vimeo, claiming that it’s only the second creative work he’s ever publically shared. I can’t imagine what reams of work he must have privately, because I found this movie to be incredibly astounding. After watching it, seriously, I’m glad my character in WoW is a Blood Elf rogue:) Before this, I always envy those Undead rouges, you know.

Let’s see what Percula are saying about his movie:

Earlier this year I got pretty bored and decided to do something creative in my spare time. I’ve been wanting to do a fight scene for a while and decided to develop a story with World of Warcraft. There are some great machinimas created by fans and at one point I thought about making a machinima as well but animation is what I do and I decided to use my skills in making something.

My thought is to make The Craft of War a series. Each episode would spotlight a different class in combat. To give you a hint of what I’m currently thinking TCoW2 will be titled Mark, Counterspell, or Execute. Blind2 is also a possiblity and there’s a comedy I’d like to try as well. Of course this is all dependent upon how Blind is recieved. If people think its crap then I probably won’t be making anymore, hehe. If that’s the case let’s not ever bring this up again :) I’ve also included the trailer for Blind at the end. I had thought about putting out a trailer a month ago but it seems stupid to have a trailer for something thats only 7-8 minutes long. I thought it turned out cool so I’ve included it.

All that being said I got some rather bad news a few months ago. The parent company of my game studio has decided lay everyone off. So with this impending layoff my future is unclear and I don’t know when or if I’ll be able to continue with The Craft of War. Perhaps this video will help me somehow if people like it and pass it around so please forward it to others. :) Although it’s not perfect I decided to call it done and put it out there.

About the song Hide & Seek, although I don’t speak or understand Japanese I thought the song fitting and would help me tell the story. I don’t really have to understand the lyrics of a song to like it. It’s more about the music and pacing and hopefully the song isn’t about baking cakes when I’m showing fighting. If you’re offended by foreign words then don’t watch. There are some Spanish, German, and English songs that I’m considering for future episodes and even songs from previous fan videos you may have seen.

I don’t know what kind of a reaction I’ll be getting but I may not be able to respond to all of the emails. I’ll try and answer the most frequently asked questions by updating this summary.

Definitely take the time to check out BLIND, and let Percula know what you think. We’d really like to see more.

Sopphetio Added Into Korean Priston Tale 2! (Video)

Korean developer and publisher Yedang added the anticipated tribe Sopphetio into the races of PristonTale 2 with a new server and a large-scale update in December 24th. Now there are three races available in Priston Tale 2, Tempskron, Morion, and Sopphetio.

History of Sopphetio, the Alchemists

This tribe lives in the far west of the continent. They were once an evil race created by Midranda long ago. But soon their dangerous nature was perceived as a threat to him, so he decided to exterminate them.

The Sopphetio managed to escape, and have built a unique culture based on alchemy, mastered by the Totem and Occult arts, that keeps them constantly growing and expanding.

They believe more in the spiritual side of individuals rather than physical strength. They have great interest in the purity of Morion and their mystics.

If you decide to join the Sopphetio, you can change class into physical attack class Rouge which is good at setting traps and assassinate, or Pilgrim which are magic specialists and like to use dark power such as curses and Summon Corpse. They are not restricted by gender.

*************************************

Sopphetio has thrown off its mysterious veiling and let’s have a close contact with it! We found a Character Creation video of Sopphetio, from which you can learn more about the two classes Pilgrim and Rogue visually!

WoW In China: Sapphiron has gone?

Someone says game is just a game. That makes a sense. But should we must hold the spirit and the faith of the role we are playing in the game? Let’s look at this story first, thank Hyuk.  Not long ago on the server Lothar in World of Warcraft China while facing the overwhelming attack of the Horde corps, a human paladin named Plapla set herself an good example, telling all her enemies attendant the very final answer: YES.

Magni Bronzebeard, the King of Ironforge was the target in the attack, Horde didn’t meet any effectual defense of the Alliance because of the imbalance in Realms, just within a few minutes, Ironforge became a complete ghost town, then the last NPC guard was down very soon.

Plapla didn’t simply “quit” as “it is just a game”, obviously a “She can’t win” game, instead she chose to stay beside Magni Bronzebeard just in the name of her profession, Paladin. A bit far from the point, but you know, seriously this situation reminds me of a classical dialogue in Black Hawk Down: “We are all afraid, but what you do now can make a difference”

Then Plapla shouted out: YOU SHALL NOT BE PASSED, which remind me of Lord of thr Rings, when Gandalf faced the Balrog in the Mines of Moria. Actually there was an obvious nonstandard grammatical construction, but hey it completely matters nothing! When reading here I was touched so much that I almost felt I was weeping, She was role-playing her character and she knew the meaning of the King to her Kingdom, her realm. It was no longer the matter of alive or dead, it was just the call of duty, it was about honor and faith.

In the end, Horde failed to kill The king, a thread in a fansite forum in China reported the whole raid including Plapla’s story, almost everyone was touched by her, even some players in the opposite realm. She is named “King’s Defender” now because of the weapon she held to fight against the raid is just exact the level 115 epic one-handed sword “King’s Defender” comes from Karazhan.

On Plapla there is something pure and something valueable which has been lost in game for such a long time, so when we discover it someday, it is just so fantastic and makes us feel a way of which we have to recall to become original, because that’s who we are, that’s why we call it RPG, and that’s why we are gaming for.

Let’s change the topic. Sapphiron has gone?

If you click this original paladin screenshot you may be amazed at the overground tombs. In the original screenshot, Muradin Bronzebeard’s room were clustered with tombs instead of skeletons. It might sound ridiculous, but yes, around the world only Chinese WoWers will not get any skeletons but a tomb after their characters died. Comical for a bit.. sure..but which make them more sadder is — their Sapphiron has gone.

The Chinese wowers knew all along that their new expansion will be changed befor coming into China. When they  are guessing that what kind Sapphiron would be like in WoTLK, The 9 (the WoW operator in China) tell them that your Sapphiron has gone by the ‘Echoes of Doom’ patch. The complaining Chinese WoWers made some pics to express their discontent.

Do you still complain bitterly that Blizzard have not give your enough DPS, or you should have more control skills? Maybe you envy those guys who can raid in Naxxramas day to night with full of epic equipments, and what you can do, is poorly doing the endless daily quests. Seriously in fact, you don’t have to think this way, because there is still one huge WoW community on the other side of the earth now is looking at you with endless jealousy in their eyes for just one fair reason: They don’t have WoTLK.

And like it or not, they are Chinese WoWers. Pity for them that they still have to get stuck in The Buring Crusade, raiding those nerfed bosses or killing time in Arenas. Yes, China is the only country who has bought the ticket to Northrend but is too unlucky to get on the boat. You ask me why? This is because of their game review mechanism. Just like some of our scholars believe that WoW is too much violent, their Culture Department think it necessary to change some content of the game that adapt it to their culture and thought. The changed content include bone Undead, bowels-gush-out abominations, the overground skeleton after death….uh… Sapphiron, the innocent bone dragon, of course. Now, Chinese WoWers are still waitting for review result. Before, they had waited TBC for half a year after Blizzard announced it. This time how long will they have to wait? Who knows. In fact, many roily chinese players had been transferred to the TaiWan server to enjoy the scenery of Northrend. Now let’s have a look at the WOW with Chinese characteristics.

Best of 2008: Significant MMO Trends Top 5

Gamasutra’s Best of 2008: The 5 Most Significant MMO Trends

MMO expert Michael Zenke takes a look at the year’s five most compelling trends in online gaming in this very end of 2008, reported by Gamasutra.com.

The details are as below:

The world of MMOs is an enormous business, and a huge opportunity for the game development community at large, from World Of Warcraft’s 1 billion USD yearly haul to microtransaction-based firms like Nexon that make tens of millions yearly in the West.

Here are the biggest stories of 2008 in online gaming – and just maybe some hints as to next year’s top titles and trends:

The AAA Fantasy Game Is A Solved Problem

Two multi-million dollar epic fantasy MMOs launched this year, and by the standards of both of the companies that made them they are simply not successful.

Funcom, the developer of Age of Conan, has admitted as much in interviews. Game director Gaute Godager stepped down as a result of the game’s post-launch failure, and the company is now focused entirely on restoring good will with the title’s diminished playerbase.

Warhammer Online developer Mythic Entertainment hasn’t admitted anything, but by the standard of comments made by company head Mark Jacobs they haven’t achieved the success they were looking for. Pre-launch statements had him saying that if a company is closing or merging servers within a few months of a game’s launch, there are problems. Warhammer has merged several servers in the days since its release.

More details on next page.

The Microtransactional March To Victory

More than anything, 2008 signaled a death-knell for the future of subscription-based online gaming. In ten, maybe even five years, paying a monthly subscription for an online game will sound as archaic as paying a play-by-the-hour fee does now.

The microtransaction model has been gaining in popularity here in the West for years now, but 2008 truly highlighted the waning power of the subscription model. From the rollout of Sony Online Entertainment’s Station Cash program to the blockbuster success of companies like Three Rings and Nexon, Western players have made it abundantly clear that they’re very comfortable paying smaller amounts of money over time to get the services they want.

Compound that with news of MT plans for upcoming products and the growing popularity of even formerly-reviled Eastern online imports, and it’s clear that there’s been a substantive shift in consumer thinking about online content.

More details on next page.

The Heroic Position Of Middleware

Though it went largely unnoticed by the gaming public, ongoing advances in MMO middleware have quietly been working to change the face of online game development. There are now four different competing products all working to capture the title of “MMO in a box”. BigWorld, the Icarus Platform, Multiverse, and HeroEngine are all directly targeting companies looking to make massively multiplayer games, and each has their claim to fame.

The ‘browser approach’ used by Multiverse combined with high-profile connections to properties like Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer has made that company quite noteworthy in certain circles. The Icarus platform showed off an iPhone in-world browser at AGDC this year, and their post-apocalyptic MMO Fallen Earth looks to capitalize on the no-show status of the Fallout online game sometime soon. BigWorld, too, has had some quiet successes connecting with in-development titles like StarGate Worlds.

And then, of course, there’s the folks at HeroEngine. Two years ago they quietly made the announcement that they were collaborating with BioWare on an unannounced title. Today, they’re the drivers behind one of the most highly-anticipated MMOs in development. As if backing Star Wars: The Old Republic wasn’t enough, they’re also connected with the developers at Stray Bullet games, Colony Studios, and Zenimax Online.

Whether the average online player has heard of these companies or not, their successes in 2008 may very well shape the future of Western MMO development.

Wizard101 Will Add New 3D World Dragonspyre January 2009

U.S. Online entertainment company KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. recently announced Dragonspyre, the first new 3D world to be added to the popular virtual world Wizard101 (www.wizard101.com) since the game launched this fall. Dragonspyre is a large, high level world expected to launch in January 2009.

Dragonspyre: A world rumored to be haunted

Dragonspyre continues the storyline of Wizard101. It is an ancient haunted world in which renegade professor Mallistaire has recently been spotted. Once an advanced militant society, Dragonspyre had an esteemed Academy rivaling that of the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts in Wizard City. It is a dark world where the inhabitants held a special interest in Fire Magic. Legend has it that in the summoning of a great Dragon Titan, the world was destroyed.

Wizard101 features spell-casting adventure and card style game play. The game’s family-friendly safety features include a collaborative play style, a chat system with many options and a character name selector. Wizard101 was recently awarded a 2008 Parent Tested Parent Approved Media Seal of Approval and has an ESRB rating of E10+.

MMOs Rule.

2008 PC Gaming Industry Review: MMOs Rule.

‘People laugh people cry. Some give up some will try.’ It may be a vivid reflection of the PC gaming industry in the year 2008. Activision and Blizzard merged into Activision Blizzard. Sierra closed and EA massively layoff. All these signs pointed to a turning point for the whole video game industry.

San Francisco Chronicle’s Christopher T. Fong reviewed the PC Gaming Industry in the past year and came to a conclusion that ‘MMOs rule. PC gaming lives.’. He named the year 2008 ‘Year of MMOs’.

In 2008, two new titles were released for our PvP pleasure: Age of Conan and Warhammer Online. They competed for the honorary title of WoW Killer. Magnificent graphics and powerful PvP system divert players’ interest for a while but, happy time didn’t last long. We were already fed up with the unending bugs in the game here and there, over and over.

Fortunately, WoW released the Echoes of Doom patch in October and brought players’ attention back with new features. A month later, the heavyweight expansion, Wrath of the Lich King released, with the most anticipated character class Death Knight available.

Though many MMO games tried their best and are still going to make waves, but, it seems that WoW took away all the limelight finally. 2008 is passed, and 2009 is coming. Game Industry needs a good start to get through this cold winter.

Women Are More Bisexual Than Men In MMO Games?

A study with over 2,400 EverQuest II gamers shows that the most hard-core players are female, that gamers are healthier than average, and that game playing is an increasingly social activity. It must be a big different with the typical impression of MMO players, reported by BBC News.

The details are as below:

Picture a typical player of a massively multiplayer game such as World of Warcraft and most people will imagine an overweight, solitary male.

But this stereotype has been challenged by a study investigating gender differences among gamers.

It found that the most hard-core players are female, that gamers are healthier than average, and that game playing is an increasingly social activity.

Despite gaming being seen as a male activity, female players now make up about 40% of the gaming population.

The study looked at gender differences in more than 2,400 gamers playing EverQuest II.

The participants, who were recruited directly out of the game, completed a web-based questionnaire about their gaming habits and lifestyles. They received an in-game item as a reward for taking part – a condition which has led to some questioning of the results.

In addition Sony Online Entertainment, Everquest’s creator, gave the US researchers access to information about the players’ in-game behaviours.

Gender bias

The results showed that, although more of the players were male, it was the female players who were the most dedicated players, spending more time each day playing the game than their male counterparts.

Lead researcher Scott Caplan of the University of Delaware said the result demonstrated how out-of-date stereotypes can be.

More details on next page.

“In many cases, stereotypes reflect what I would call a ‘cultural time lag’,” he said.

“What we think about men and women and videogames may have been true 10 or 15 years ago, when there were mainly console video games or single-player games.

“But what were seeing now is that games become social, and as these online games become communities then the attraction for that kind of behaviour might increase for women,” said Prof Caplan.

“I think a lot of our stereotypes are based on the way computer games have been, rather than where they’re going.”

Consumer focus

Another unexpected finding was that the online game players – particularly the women – were healthier than the general population, though this was drawn from self-reported levels of exercise and body mass index.

Dmitri Williams, a researcher at the University of Southern California and a co-author on the study, said one possible explanation could be that playing computer games reduces the amount of time spent in front of the television.
Consoles such as the Wii have won a cross-gender audience

WoW: Reaches 11.5 Million Subscribers

Blizzard Entertainment announced that World of Warcraft’s subscriber base has grown to 11.5 million gamers worldwide since the PC MMORPG launched in November 2004. Just two months after hitting the 11 million subscriber milestone, World of Warcraft has already gained another half-a-million supporters, which means Azeroth has surpassed the whole Greece’s population.

The milestone follows the November release of World of Warcraft’s second expansion Wrath of the Lich King, which sold 4 million copies in its first month, 2.8 million of that in its first 24 hours of availability, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time, according to Blizzard.

The previous record holder was the game’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade, released in January 2007, selling some 2.4 million copies. World of Warcraft reached its 10 million subscribers milestone in January of this year, and surpassed 11 million subscribers in October.

The game is currently available in eight languages and in several territories, including North America, Europe, China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Latin America, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.

“We’re pleased to welcome the new and returning players who have helped World of Warcraft reach these new milestones, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and support that the game’s global community has continued to show,” says Blizzard Entertainment CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. “We look forward to providing all of them with an excellent entertainment experience for a long time to come.”

Top 5 Most Memorable Events in MMORPG History

Have you ever read the article titled Top 5 Most Memorable Events in MMORPG History on MMOCRUNCH? These events were regarded IMPORTANT not only because they have an extensive and far-reaching impact, but because they reflect the social aspects of online games. When the article was posted, it provoked the readers’ strong interest right away. To those who started to play game just a few years ago, maybe the list is unfamiliar, but in fact these events have an influence on the current game concepts, and even beyond the gaming scene. Now let’s run back over these well-known events again.

Event One: The Assassination of Lord British – Ultima Online – August 8, 1997

Lord British was killed during an in-game appearance on Ultima Online’s beta test on August 8, 1997. A royal visit was conducted as a part of server population stress test. A player character known as Rainz cast a spell called “fire field” on Lord British that, surprisingly, killed him. According to Starr Long, the whole thing was just a human error: Lord British’s character, like others, had been made invulnerable, but by design the invulnerability did not persist over several game sessions. Shortly before the incident, the server had crashed, and Richard Garriott had forgotten to set his invulnerability flag on when logging on again. Shortly afterwards, Rainz’s account was banned from the beta test for previously exploiting bugs rather than reporting them (infamously used by his character Aquaman to kill many player characters, a purported griefing incident). According to Origin, he was not banned for the assassination but rather for previous complaints against his account that were brought to light as a result of this attention. The massive amount of lag, caused by the stress test, was a factor in Lord British’s death, as well as the guards being deactivated in the area, which allowed Rainz to steal, avoiding immediate death. 99% of the players were at Lord British’s castle. Only the few at Lord Blackthorn’s castle were the lucky witnesses to this historic event. Those known to have been present besides Lords British and Blackthorn were their jesters Chuckles and Heckles and the following players; Rainz, Dr.Pepper, Mental, DemonSoth, Haaaaaach, Helios, Phobos, Gildoreal, Wind Lord and Kylan.

Event Two: LEEEEROY JENKINS! – World of Warcraft -

I don’t know any MMORPG player that hasn’t seen this, hell even my friends that have never played a MMORPG know about this.

The Internet phenomenon started with the release of a video clip online to the WoW forums. The video was released by the Alliance player guild “Pals for Life” on the Laughing Skull PvP realm. It features a group of players discussing a detailed battle strategy while one of their number, Leeroy, is away from his computer. Their plan is ruined when Leeroy returns and, ignorant of the strategy, immediately charges headlong into battle shouting his own name as a battle cry. His companions rush to stop him, and his subsequent actions ruin the meticulous plan and the encounter ends in failure for the group. His response to the other players’ reactions, “at least I have chicken”, was also much parodied.

The South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft,” was a parody of the World of Warcraft series as a whole, with the episode’s antagonist a griefer named Jenkins.

Leeroy Jenkins later found himself immortalized in the very game that started it off. Blizzard added the attainable title of Jenkins to players who could kill 50 of the famous dragon whelps from the movie within 15 seconds, with the achievement “Leeeeeeeeeeeeeroy!” being attained for the same feat.

Event Three: The Epic Heist – EVE Online – November 2005

Click for full image

This was published in September’s 2005 issue of PC Gamer UK. It is a detailed account of what has to be one of most beautifully executed in-game scams in a MMORPG ever pulled. It breaks all previous world records for ‘virtual crime’.

The game in question is Eve Online, where corporate espionage and political intrigue have become an integral part of the game.

The perpetrator of the heist was the Guiding Hand Social Club (GHSC) corporation (a corporation being similar to a clan in Eve); a freelance mercenary outfit that offers their services (which usually involves corp infiltration, theft and assassination) to the highest bidder. Over a year in planning, the GHSC infilitrated their target’s corp with their own members and gained their trust, as well as access to the corp hangers, with time. It all concluded in a perfectly timed climax, with a massive theft in multiple corp hangars synchronized with the in-game killing of the corporation’s CEO, the primary target of the contract.

What’s most interesting and impressive about this operation is that it was entirely ‘legal’ and within the game’s own rules, and the mastermind and his agents pulled it off together flawlessly, all the while staying in character. The estimated real-life value of the items stolen is, according to PC Gamer, 16,500 USD. The in-game value of course is much, much higher as the things stolen would take years and years to aquire.

Event Four: Plague Outbreak – World of Warcraft – September 2005

The Corrupted Blood plague incident was one of the first events to affect entire servers. Patch 1.7 saw the opening of Zul’Gurub, the game’s first 20-player raid dungeon where players faced off against an ancient tribe of jungle trolls under the sway of the ancient Blood God, Hakkar the Soulflayer. Upon engaging Hakkar, players were stricken by a debuff (a spell that negatively affects a player) called “Corrupted Blood” which would periodically sap their life. The disease would also be passed on to other players who were simply standing in close proximity to an infected person. Originally this malady was confined within the Zul’Gurub instance but made its way into the outside world by way of hunter or warlock pets that contracted the disease.

Within hours Corrupted Blood had infected entire cities such as Ironforge and Orgrimmar because of their high player concentrations. Low-level players were killed in seconds by the high-damage disease. Eventually Blizzard fixed the issue so that the plague could not exist outside of Zul’Gurub.

Event Five: Death of the Sleeper – EverQuest – November 15-17, 2003

The guild Blood of the Spider on The Rathe server was the first guild system-wide to kill Ventani (the fourth warder) on July 28, 2001, and therefore wake the sleeper. The event caused a stir on the server when Kerafyrm went into multiple zones, including Skyshrine, killing everyone and everything in his path.

On November 15, 2003, on the Rallos Zek PvP server, the three top guilds (Ascending Dawn, Wudan, and Magus Imperialis Magicus) assembled over 180 players with the intent to wake and kill The Sleeper. This was in response to an attempt to wake The Sleeper by an Iksar monk named Stynkfyst, who partnered with the largest random-pk guild of the time. Having been a former member of uber-guild Ascending Dawn, he had the knowledge the random pk guild needed to wake The Sleeper. The top guilds did not assemble their forces until word of Stynkfyst’s intentions had spread, and it became clear that he intended to wake The Sleeper, forever preventing future guilds from farming the old loot table. Until this point, waking The Sleeper had not been seriously considered by any guilds, as it was believed that waking The Sleeper would make the offending guild’s players kill-on-sight to the other guilds of the server. After 3 hours and 15 minutes, at 26% health, Kerafyrm disappeared (despawned). The players talked with the EverQuest Game Masters, and there was a general consensus that a bug had caused the problem, although some suggested (backed by statements from one GM) that higher-ups at SOE had purposely despawned Kerafyrm, because it was not intended to be part of the story.

The following day, the players logged in to find that Kerafyrm was back in his “sleeping” state, ready to be triggered again. There was also an apology on the official EverQuest forums from SOE, explaining that they had stopped the encounter because they feared the players were engaging the boss in an unintended manner. Although annoyed (the players pointed out that the reasons SOE gave could not have occurred, and felt lied to), they attempted to battle Kerafyrm once again.

On November 17, 2003, after a nearly 3-hour battle, Kerafyrm was defeated. He had between 100 million and 400 million hit points, likely around 250 million (most EverQuest bosses have 2 million at most), was immune to all spells except wizard’s manaburn spell and Shadow Knight’s Harm Touch, possessed two death touch abilities (abilities that automatically killed players), and attacked players for 6999 damage per swing. By using the cleric’s epic weapon and other resurrection spells, the players were able to bring their dead characters back into the battle faster than Kerafyrm could kill them all.

Maybe you have your own list of Top 5 Most Memorable Events in MMORPG History on your mind, and maybe in your opinion, there are far more events deserved to be memorized. Then why not share them with us through leaving a comment?
