Korean Developer Acts Nazi to Promote MMOFPS

It is absolutely incredible news.

The time was Jan 17th. In a cold winter afternoon in South Korea, a group of Nazi cosplayers(maybe they are not) who were half-naked and wearing old German army uniforms, appeared in the street at downtown of Seoul.  They were not the fanatical militarists aiming to take over the city but to promote a new “the World War II theme based” MMOFPS, Karma II, which is developed by Dragonfly.

According to several passers-by, this “army” did cause a tiny surprise in the downtown, they were shouting and holding the banner of Karma II, but after realizing it was a promotion, more and more citizens joined them to take photos.

About Karma II, we only know that it is a World War II-themed MMOFPS to be released in 2009, based on Karma Online(2002). Dragonfly planed and developed the servers and other two game company in charge of the development of screen and program.

For more information, please check the Karma II gameplay video as below. You can also check their offcial site.

A Mysterious Package arrived from Mythic

News Original From:

A Mysterious Package arrived from Mythic Entertainment
Part of Keen’s adventure in MMORPG, Random things, Real Life, WAR

A package arrived at the K&G headquarters today from Mythic Entertainment.  Opening the package revealed something very unexpected….

Mysterious package from Mythic Entertainment

After the eerie music and mental image of Josh Drescher cutting our hair with a scary smile on his face faded from our minds, the gears began to turn as to what the contents of this package could represent.

Hair color creme (with Fruit Oil Concentrates), A Hair Cut Kit, and a message saying more to come on January 29th…

Our first guess is that these things could obviously represent something on the way in an upcoming patch.  We know that 1.1.1 is going to be an important patch with the ‘Zone Domination’ system.  Perhaps Mythic is going to allow players to change their character appearances, hair, hair color, and other cosmetic things.  That would be the obvious answer, but maybe there’s more to this mysterious package-turned-puzzle…

What do you think?  Do these hair care products foreshadow fluff on the way to Warhammer Online…. or do Graev and I need to be afraid of what’s to come on January 29th?

Update #1 – Further brainstorming has revealed the following possibilities… Taken from info about the Dwarf Slayer:

“A notable aspect to Dwarf culture is the Slayer Oath. A Dwarf who has suffered a great shame, loss, or humiliation will dye his hair and beard orange, and cut it into a Mohawk using pig grease to stick it in place.”

Could this be a clue that the Dwarf Slayer is on the way?!

Putting The Gay In Game?

Putting the Gay in Game?
January 20th, 2009 by Theo, MMOsite Columnist

Are games waning behind the times in regards to how they portray homosexual characters and relationships, and what are some, if any, games that have done it right?  These were some of the thoughts that came to columnist Brad Hilderbrand’s mind after he had played a particular mission in Fable 2.

While playing he had “happened across a random farm in the countryside.” and, “Like most regions in Fable, the kindly proprietor of the farm had a task for me, one which I took on with much relish.” This particular farmer had a different dilemma than most NPCs, not your typical RPG task, “You see, the farmer was concerned about his son, a strapping young man who had yet to find that special lady with whom he would carry on the family name. Our friend of the earth asked me to go into the city and find a proper date for his boy, a gal who could make the surprisingly eligible bachelor happy. I took on the task, but figured it would be wise to chat with the young man first, as this all seemed a bit odd.”

What followed was something quite different, not only in that it was an unexpected twist but also in the way it unfolded, “Sure enough, when I mentioned the task to the farmer’s son he immediately got nervous and began to stumble and stammer. This boy had a secret, and I was beginning to understand exactly what it was. I decided to head off into town and woo a villager for this lovelorn soul, and I did exactly that, and he was a fine gentleman indeed. That’s right, though the random NPC in the side quest never said the words out loud, the boy was gay, and he had been trapped living a lie for a long, long time.  After finding the date and returning to the farm, I witnessed what was a rather tender moment between father and son, as the boy opened up to his dad about his hidden feelings and his father reacted first with genuine shock, then acceptance and understanding.”

Hilderbrand further remarked, “While it may be the sort of outing homosexual individuals hope for when they finally decide to break the news, things rarely work out so calmly. All in all, it was a surprisingly touching moment for a game which up to that point had allowed me to wantonly kill villagers; loot and pillage till my pockets were overflowing and generally be all sorts of a *******. I had never expected Fable to teach me a lesson in matters of human sexuality, and it got me thinking.”

This quest had really grabbed him, forcing some serious contemplation, “Had I ever seen the issue of homosexuality handled so delicately in a game before? My mind raced for examples of past gay characters, and the figures I settled on didn’t exactly paint a flattering picture.”

Historically games have done a bang up job in portraying the overly effeminate and flamboyant stereotypes, characters like, “Makoto from the JRPG Enchanted Arms …Mr. Silver and Mr. Gold from God Hand, …Roxy and Poison from Final Fight” all of which “portray gay characters in a negative and stereotypical light” he says.

Hilderbrand feels there are specific historical reasons behind such stereotypes, he explains, “Since nearly the beginning of gaming gay characters have been utilized, though they almost always fell under the categories of villain or comic foil. These early characters were often cross-dressing, effeminate individuals whose inclusion as comic relief helped them circumvent Nintendo and Sega’s censorship codes, which were modeled off the early Hollywood production codes which banned ’sexual perversion.’ Also, the late 80s and early 90s marked the height of the AIDS scare ¡This vilification of the entire group seeped into gaming as well, as the lifestyle was decried as ‘evil’ by many in the mainstream community.”

Of course this wasn’t the only portrayal; there was a time, a “golden age” where gay characters were treated with a bit more tact and thoughtfulness.  From the mid nineties through the millennium, “There were still plenty of the old stereotyped characters to go around, but games like Indigo Prophecy: The Longest Journey and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 all featured openly gay or bisexual characters and gave them more to do than prance about in women’s clothing speaking with a lisp and getting into slap fights. 2001 was also the year the original Fable was released, giving players the opportunity to date and marry same-sex partners if they so chose. For many, this was the first time in gaming where they could actually control their own romantic destiny rather than being led toward a simple and inevitable conclusion with one specific character…”

Read more on the next page

However, even with this slow transition from senselessness to sensitivity regarding this issue Hilderbrand concludes that the game industry seems to have, “reverted back to previous stereotypes once thought to be on the way out. Once again gay characters are treated as the villains and the comic relief”   and in closing he asserts, “Thus, even though we saw a glimpse of equality a few years ago, unfortunately games have fallen back into the rut of stereotype and hyperbole.  ¡Games simply refuse to be gay, and for that we all suffer.” |

If you want to read the full article go HERE.

If you are curious to see what characters from what games are bi or homosexual, there is a top 10 list HERE and a top 20 list HERE.

Do you agree with Brad regarding the game industries slide back into insensitive and generalized portrayals of homosexual characters, or is he simply expecting too much political correctness and forward thinking from an industry that is regularly the first attacked when discussing hot button issues?

DC Universe Online Interview with Creative Director

DC Universe Online, the first project out of Sony Online’s Austin studio, explores the various worlds of DC Comics’ superheroes and villains. A massively-multiplayer experience, DC Universe Online brings high-energy action to the forefront with a combat system designed to deliver a fast-paced action experience with the extraordinary powers of your personally created heroes and villains at your disposal. Battle with or against their favorite DC Super Heroes and Villains including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Joker. We recently had the chance to chat with Jens Andersen, the Creative Director on DC Universe Online for Sony Online Entertainment-Austin, now let him give us more details about DCUO.

CES 09: Developer Walkthrough

MMOsite: I am glad that we have this opportunity to do an interview with you. To start, can you make a brief introduction to yourself and your team?

Jens Andersen: My name is Jens Andersen and I am the Creative Director on DC Universe Online

MMOsite: Could you give us a brief introduction about the gameworld of DC Universe Online in your own words?

Jens Andersen: Sure!  DC Universe is an action-MMO for PS3 and the PC.  Players get to step through the door into places like Gotham, Metropolis and tons of other fantastic locations from the comics.  Once there they will fight along side or against some of the most famous heroes and villains in the world.  And the cool thing is, we’re making you their equal.

MMOsite: How would you describe the artistic style of DC Universe Online? And the background?

Jens Andersen: The entire game is based on the artistic vision of Jim Lee. He is the comic book legend at WildStorm Productions and he’s also the executive creative director for DCUO.  It’s a slick looking game and every time we show it people are really amazed at what they see.  I think the game looks amazing and I can’t wait for people to see how each of the environments contrast each other.  Gotham feels very different from Metropolis.  The game looks amazing!  Kudos to our Art Director Jared Carr and his amazing team.

MMOsite: Frankly speaking, this game reminds me of City of Heroes and City of Villains. What impacts have these past comic book games had on the development of DC Universe Online?

Jens Andersen: Well I’ll be frank as well, we need to get this game in your hands so you can put that notion behind you.  Other than the fact that we are a super hero genre we are completely different.  And it isn’t just the IP that sets us apart.  We’ve built a game form the ground up focused on the power fantasy of being a super hero.  This meant we were willing to make changes to the MMO mold that supported that direction.  There is no auto attack, to hit rolls, etc.  We didn’t just skin an MMO and put capes on our characters.  This is a completely new breed that includes action, physics and an epic scope to the world we are creating.

MMOsite: Where does the development for DC Universe Online stand now? Can you reveal us some info on the dates for commercial launch?

Jens Andersen: We are really pleased and excited with how development on DCUO is coming along. We have not announced a release date yet.

MMOsite: What major challenges did you encounter while developing DC Universe Online? Any difficulties now?

Jens Andersen: There were several.  First, as a steward of an amazingly popular IP we have to make sure we get it right.  The choices we make on what stories to tell, where to tell them and who to tell them with are critical to our success. To that end we work very closely with several movers and shakers from the world of DC Comics like Jim Lee & Geoff Johns.  Second, the physics portion of our game.  We made a commitment to this feature as a key element in delivering the super hero fantasy.  So we made sure to get all of our technical ducks in a row so we could deliver it on the city wide scale.  Third, I would say the action combat.  Trying to make all this stuff work in a server authenticated environment with all the considerations for potential lag due to connection speed was hard to tackle and still keep it feeling responsive.  Not to mention we had to make sure we could maintain balance as the game progressed.  It’s easy to tackle the problem in a single player experience or in a short multiplayer session with less persistence.  But our game has to live and breathe for months and years not minutes and hours.  These were all tough challenges and the team handled them beautifully.

MMOsite: Come back to the game itself. Will there be any faction classification? And how will the combat look like in DC Universe Online?

Jens Andersen: Players will choose to be a hero or villain.  Once they are in the game they can band together with like minded players and form leagues, legions or societies to try and save or rule the world.  Our combat is very responsive and is more skill based in its tactics.  In our game when someone throws a car at you we don’t want you to hide, we want you to catch it and throw it back.

MMOsite: Can we choose some super heroes such as superman and Batman as my avatar? Or they are only NPCs?

Jens Andersen: You can’t play as Superman or Batman because they already exist in the DC Universe. Plus, you can’t have a game with thousands of Superman characters running around for obvious reasons. However, you will be able to create your own character in their likeness. So, for example, if you want to be a ninja character who uses gadgets, you’ll have something similar to Batman that you’ll be able to make your own.  And players shouldn’t worry about not being as powerful as these characters.  If we’re truly making you Batman like or Superman like then you can assume you will be their equal, not their inferior.  However, I still don’t recommend just punching Superman in the face.

MMOsite: What kind of player economy can we expect to see in DC Universe Online?

Jens Andersen: We will be talking about that at a later time.  Look forward to some cool information in the future on how we’re handling our economy.

MMOsite: What is your favorite feature of DC Universe Online in your mind? And why?

Jens Andersen: It’s the physics combat.  Grabbing some guy with my telekinetic beam and slamming him into walls is fun.  Or the Quantum power that lets me make a singularity I can drag through the world sucking up anything that comes near it, cars and people alike.  It’s just plain cool!

MMOsite: Besides the US market, do you have any plan to launch the DC Universe Online in other countries and regions?

Jens Andersen: We’ll be launching DCUO in the U.S. and in several European countries as well.

MMOsite: Have you decided the business mode yet?

Jens Andersen: Nope.  We’re focusing on the game, not building to a business model.  We pay attention to fun and once we have it, we’ll figure out the best way to give our players access to it.

MMOsite: Do you have anything more about DC Universe Online we didn’t involve in this interview that you’d like to tell our readers?

Jens Andersen: I just want to thank the team for the amazing work they are doing.  The studio has put the right people in place to make this product.  The folks here in Austin are not only extremely talented but have a lot of diversity.  We have experts from both the MMO and Action space who are coming together to solve the unique challenges a game like this presents.  Fresh looks and new perspectives are leading down a path few folks are walking on and the results are showing.  We look forward to getting it into your hands.

Xbox Teen Charged With Taco Assault To Mom

News from my fox Orlando, a mother reported to the police to arrest her son because he thrown a taco in her face after she unplugged his Xbox.

The 19-year-old young man, Zachary Moir, now is siting in his jail cell in Volusia County. His mother Dena Moir wanted to press charges to give him a lesson.

“I’ve been having trouble with him for awhile won’t work, wont’ go to school. He’s being rude and disrespectful. Pushing things to the limit as far as the violence.”

“He went ahead and hit me with the taco and I got taco all over my shirt and kitchen. I’ve threatened to call police before. But anyway this time, I thought he went too far so I called police and he’s in jail now.”

We don’t know what kind of adjudgement will be waiting for Zachary. But I guess if the dinner was not taco, maybe he would not throw it in his mother’s face. :p

TwelveSky 2 Europe Exclusive Interview

MAYN Interactive Pte Ltd., an up-and-coming game publisher, officially announced its partnership with Gigassoft Co., Ltd. and their plan to bring the highly anticipated and critically acclaimed “TwelveSky 2″, a martial arts based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Play Game (MMORPG), to English-Speaking gamers within the European market.

Initially released at the end of 2003, the saga of “TwelveSky” underwent heavy reconstruction in 2007. The reincarnated “TwelveSky 2″ includes completely revamped game systems and an assortment of new features.

“TwelveSky 2″ harnesses the true potential of the self-developed game engine, GXD, which resulted in upgraded graphics. This change also gave way to enhanced skills, wars, maps, and quests. Additionally “TwelveSky 2″ will be introducing new mechanics such as resource gathering and harvesting, item crafting, a new player race, and riding mounts, among others. Moreover, the European version of “TwelveSky 2″ will be sporting a completely new and rewritten story arch, even compared to its sister counterparts which are currently released in Asia. Recently, we interviewed Shawn Silverman, Chief Game Operations Officer of MAYN Interactive. Now let’s him give us more details about “TwelveSky 2 Europe”
Click here to download HD version.

MMOsite: I am glad that we have this opportunity to make an interview with you. To start, can you make a brief introduction to yourself and MAYN Interactive?

Shawn: Thank you very much for this wonderful opportunity. My name is Shawn Silverman and I am the Chief Game Operation Officer at MAYN Interactive Pte Ltd. MAYN (www.mayngames.com) is a global online game publisher focusing on North American and European markets. Since our founding, we have been determined to provide our users (which we call “guests”) with top quality support and services while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction. Just like our motto states, “In everything we do, we ask ourselves a simple question: Will this make our players happy?” We plan to stick to it!

MMOsite: Would you care to introduce the game’s developer, Gigassoft? When did development of TwelveSky 2 begin, and where is it currently available?

Shawn: Gigassoft Co., Ltd was founded in 2002 and has since become one of the most successful online game developers in South Korea. Work on “TwelveSky 2″ first began in 2007. As of this writing, players from South Korea and Taiwan have access to a live server of “TwelveSky 2″ each tailored to their own culture, with Europe quickly on its way.

MMOsite: Although there have been a few information floating around the web concerning TwelveSky 2 Europe, many people are still unfamiliar with this upcoming MMOG. Could you give us a brief synopsis of TwelveSky 2 Europe? Why should players be interested in this particular game?

Shawn: “TwelveSky 2 Europe” brings a brand new experience to the market. Even though the game is based off of a pre-existing Intellectual Property, many players who are already familiar with the original will be immediately surrounded by new things, even new towns. “TwelveSky 2″ is unique in the fact that it focuses heavily on MASSIVE Player versus Player battles and player-ran governments and societies. Complete with gorgeous graphics, an immersive storyline (completely independent from the other TwelveSky 1 and 2 versions), and numerous non-combat features such as a Badge Achievement system and resource hunting and gathering. With all that, what is not to love?

MMOsite: What options are available to players when they create their characters? To what extent is it possible to customize their attributes and appearance?

Shawn: Our guests can customize their in game avatars appearance through a selection of hairstyles, faces, genders, classes, and clans. Each clan has its own unique design, as does each class have its own unique items. Furthermore, Gigassoft has gone to great lengths to provide a large assortment of highly detailed weapons and armor (not to mention pets!) which will enhance the player’s appearance even more.

MMOsite: What is the background of TwelveSky 2? Is there a storyline in the game?

Shawn: “TwelveSky 2 Europe” has taken a different approach compared to both the original and sister versions of #2. Centered on the re-emergence of a once forgotten people, the Ancient Sky Clan, users are given the offer of a lifetime!

The first two chapters of our professionally written story are currently available on our website at www.12sky2.com and as we get closer to the launch of Closed Beta, we will continue to update the archive with more “books”. Once our game goes live, we will be taking a unique approach to releasing game lore as we will do so via Live Events under the supervision of industry recognized “Event Managers”.

MMOsite: We have interviewed Seo Hyojung, the strategic division director of Gigassoft, and he said that TwelveSky 2 is not only a continuation of TwelveSky; it’s more of a new game. How do you comment that? What are the major features it inherits from TwelveSky? And as an evolution, what will be the major improvements?

Shawn: Mr. Hyojung would be correct! “TwelveSky 2″ cannot be seen as a mere continuation or an “expansion”. It is much more than that. To say the least, it is a remake and a radical evolution of the “TwelveSky Saga” as a whole!

Naturally, much of what the users fell in love with made their way back into “TwelveSky 2″, although very much polished and refined I might add! Such as, Player versus Player battles are the epicenter of everything, and we all thought “Why should the players have to wait until the ‘end game’ to have fun?” So now, players are able to fight one another on equal turf from level 10 onwards! With the optimization of the proprietary engine “GXD”, “TwelveSky 2″ is able to offer the players a lot, lot more!

MMOsite: Seo Hyojung also revealed that a new special faction added in Twelve Sky 2, can we see this new faction in your upcoming version? Would you care to give us some details about that new faction?

Shawn: This new faction is called, “The Ancient Sky Clan”. Many years ago, the Sky Clan was the dominate and ruling civilization, fair and respected. But during one fateful morning, the entire Clan fell victim to a fatal volcanic eruption–or so everyone believed.

With the revelation of a once presumed vagabond, the members of every tribe have been given the opportunity to pledge their loyalty to the Sky Clan. But first, certain¡ requirements must be met in order to show their…worth to the Great Swordsman known as Kian.

MMOsite: TwelveSky is well known for its unique combat system, so what kind of a combat system can we find in Twelve Sky 2?  How deep will the PvP combat go?

Shawn: Unfortunately I can’t get too in deep about all of our features, but competitive combat will be accessible from a very early state. In addition, users will be able to vote for their Clan’s General which will lead them to success in the battlefield!

MMOsite: What’s your favorite feature of the game? Why do you believe this oriental game will be appealing to the western users?

Shawn: Personally, my favorite feature of the game is the massive Player versus Player battles. I’m sure many people share my passion for cooperative gameplay, especially in an MMO where it is supposed to be second nature. To me, nothing beats fighting against hundreds of like-minded gamers who have the same goal: victory for their people. These wars can get pretty intense!

MMOsite: Which territory/territories are you targeting? And have you decided on the exact date for TwelveSky 2 Europe’s closed beta testing? And what about the other milestones, like open beta and commercial launch?

Shawn: Right now we are currently publishing “TwelveSky 2″ for an English-speaking European audience; however we do not plan on blocking regions who are outside of our “official jurisdiction”. We have set internal dates for our betas and launch but we have a strong policy against releasing dates we cannot uphold. Due to the extensive game changes being worked on at this time, all I can quote is first quarter of 2009 for Closed Beta! So very, very soon!

MMOsite: What’s your version of the free to play revenue model, and why do you feel it’s the best choice for the game?

Shawn: Like other Free-to-Play revenue models, we will be offering the game and standard game play for free. Additionally, we’ll be offering optional services such as gender changes and name changes as well as offering miscellaneous virtual items such as cosmetic armor which will allow the user to further customize their appearance.

We believe that games do not require a subscription-based model to succeed now-a-days, and by opening up your product to everyone, more users will be able to experience the game that you’ve poured your heart and soul into. After all, aren’t games made to have fun in?

MMOsite: Have we missed any important topics or is there anything else you wanna say about TwelveSky 2 Europe to our readers?

Shawn: Well, we recently launched a new version to our TwelveSky 2 website, available at http://www.12sky2.com. This edition includes an ever-growing collection of lore stories, screenshots, movies, and best of all, the official forums. With the message boards now publicly available, those of you who are new and old alike to the Saga of TwelveSky may learn and discuss that which is our wondrous world.

Last but not least, I would like to thank MMOsite once again for their time and for this opportunity; we hope to host a Closed Beta Key giveaway in conjunction with your community very soon! ;)
